IIT Kanpur observes the annual day of the institute’s cell for differently abled person

IIT Kanpur celebrated the annual day of the institute’s cell on January 13. The objective of the event was to focus on the use of sign language.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur commemorated the annual day of the institute's cell for differently-abled persons (CDAP) on January 13, 2024. The event emphasised the importance of the international day of persons with disabilities. The purpose of the event was to highlight the usage of sign language, used to communicate with mute and deaf people.

IIT Kanpur director, S Ganesh gave information regarding the transforming influence of the CDAP on campus and expressed innovative thoughts to improve the inclusion of differently-abled individuals.

The annual day of the Institute's CDAP demonstrates the institute's commitment to encouraging diversity and creating a supportive environment for people with diverse abilities.

Technological Innovation for Empowerment

IIT Kanpur, chemistry professor, Siddhartha Panda presented his innovative haptic smartwatch and braille learning device, designed to empower partially blind and visually impaired students. This was followed by insights from Ashutosh Modi, professor of department of computer science and engineering, who discussed his upcoming project exploring the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance sign language comprehension and interpretation.

The event resonated with cultural performances like a motivational poem by a young student, an uplifting song by an MTech student, and a play presented by children from the Ambedkar Institute. The performances showcased the talent and resilience of individuals with disabilities, demonstrating the power of artistic expression.

Coordinator of CDAP, Kaushik Bhattacharya, chairperson of the student’s placement office, IIT Kanpur, Raju Kumar Gupta, and grievance redressal officer, Sandeep Singh, were present at the event.
