NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur will soon be setting up a Centre of Excellence for affordable and indigenous medical devices and diagnostics. The institute will be awarded funding of Rs 20 crore by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
In an official statement, V K Tiwari, director of the institute, said, “We thank ICMR, the apex body of Government of India spearheading biomedical research, for entrusting us with this responsibility. We look forward to working closely with ICMR and making meaningful contributions through these efforts.”
IIT Kharagpur had responded to a call made by ICMR in January 2020 for setting up the centre of excellence to promote entrepreneurship in priority areas. Based on the call, IIT Kharagpur had proposed to work in areas such as artificial intelligence in healthcare, medical devices for screening and diagnostics, medical implants and biosensors in healthcare.
“We had a rewarding experience in engaging with ICMR through a pilot ICMR – IIT Kharagpur MedTech internship program that drew great interest among engineering and medical students,” he added.
The centre looks forward to targetting marketable technologies in a mission-oriented time frame to address challenging problems. The centre will further work on a defined licensing path.
The centre of excellence will extend medical technology-related support to other organizations, including different centres of ICMR.
