IIT Madras opens applications for online data science programme

IIT Madras will provide scholarships upto 75% of the course fee for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology Madras has opened the application process for its online data science programme for the 2021-22 session. The programme is open to anyone who has completed Class 12 and studied maths and English till Class 10, said a statement from IIT Madras.
IIT Madras is also providing scholarships upto 75% of the course fee to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The last date to apply for this programme is August 30, 2021. Students can apply through the official website- onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in . The classes for the next qualifier batch will commence in September 2021.
The students applying for the course will have to go through a qualifier process and those who clear the exam will be given admission to the foundation level of the programme which can lead to a BSc degree. In the first batch of the BSc Data Science programme, out of over 30,000 to register for the qualifier process, only 8,154 students qualified. According to the IIT Madras statement, 7,116 ultimately joined the foundation level.
After which the programme will offer four weeks of online training through video lectures, assignments, and live interactions.
The programme provides the opportunity to study at IIT Madras without writing the JEE Advanced exam for admission to most undergraduate programmes at the IITs. Students will be allowed to pursue this programme along with their regular courses, said a statement from IIT Madras.
Andrew Thangaraj, professor in-charge of data science programme, IIT Madras said: “With this program, IIT Madras is delivering the highest quality learning opportunity to a very large number of learners, without compromising the rigor of the process. The combination of online classes and in-person invigilated exams accomplishes this. At each stage, students will have the freedom to exit from the program and receive a certificate, diploma or a degree, from IIT Madras.”
Furthermore, Vignesh Muthuvijayan, data science program, IIT Madras, said: “Data science is becoming an effective tool in solving many real-world problems and is being increasingly adopted across industries to make informed business decisions. The specializations in Programming and Data Science were chosen since the concepts can be taught completely online, including hands-on practical learning.”
