IIT Madras, Power Grid Corp launch scholarships for BTech students from poor families

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is launching a scholarship programme for IIT Madras BTech students from economically weaker sections in a collaboration with Power Grid Corporation of India. About Rs 10.5 crore of funding will be provided by the Power Grid Corporation of India for the "Power Grid Endowment scholarship" under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

According to a statement from IIT Madras, this fund will be used for covering the tuition fees of eligible students. IIT Madras also claimed that this is the first time the institute is receiving such a huge amount as a single contribution for scholarships under a CSR initiative in the financial year 2021-22. The scholarship will also focus more on women students to encourage women to take up courses such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

An agreement was signed today May 7, 2022, by professor Mahesh Panchagnula, dean of alumni and corporate relations, IIT Madras and VK Singh, director of personnel at Power Grid Corporation of India for implementing the scholarship programme.

"IIT Madras’ motto is to be an ‘Institute for all.’ Initiatives like the BSc degree programme and scholarships for deserving students have made IIT Madras more accessible for everyone. The institute records its sincere thanks to POWERGRID. IIT Madras is also planning to expand such scholarships to all technical institutions across the country,” said V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras.
