IIT Madras welcomes JEE candidates, parents for campus visit before admissions

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has invited candidates and their parents to visit the campus and ‘demo day’ events before admissions 2025. IIT Madras is also hosting ‘First Principles Teachers Awards’ this year to recognise educators who have made significant contributions to the students’ educational journeys.

According to the official IIT Madras statement, the events will be held in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad. Interested JEE candidates are advised to register at the earliest since there is a limited number of seats for these events. Candidates can register on the official website, askiitm.com/demo-day.

Both students and parents can experience the campus through the ‘Demo Day’ and interact with the faculty and alumni during these events.

Students can seek clarification about recent changes in the new courses. Recently, IIT Madras introduced two BTech programmes , computational engineering and mechanics (CEM) and instrumentation and biomedical engineering (iBME), besides BTech in AI and data analytics, which was introduced last year.

IIT Madras: Event dates

According to the official IIT Madras statement, students unable to travel to IIT Madras or any of the six events can participate in the online session scheduled on June 3. During the online session, the director of IIT Madras and other faculty will respond to queries related to academic and non-academic aspects of the campus.

Talking about the new award, Amrutash Misra an IIT Madras alumnus, spearheading the AskIITM initiative, said: “We believe that the IIT JEE syllabus is beautiful, and includes many exciting concepts in physics, chemistry and mathematics. But, because of the nature of competitive exams, most students are rushing through the syllabus, focusing more on memorising than understanding the concepts. These students have a tougher time in IIT because they have to relearn everything.”

About IIT Madras

IIT Madras currently offers students flexibility in choosing courses through the elective system. Students can opt for 40% to 50% of their courses as electives, including programmes from other departments. Students can opt for a ‘minor’ or an inter-disciplinary dual degree.

According to the official IIT Madras statement, the branch change system is no longer required and has been discontinued since 2024. Additionally, the number of credits has been reduced to 400 from 432, which eases the student’s workload by almost 10%.

The workshops for students have been reintegrated into the semester, adding two more weeks for vacation time. Earlier, the workshops were held during the vacation.

IIT Madras introduced fine arts and culture excellence’ (FACE) admission to undergraduate programmes from the academic year 2025 - 26. The objective is to encourage students who have achieved excellence in fine arts and culture.

“The ‘Sports Excellence Admission’ (SEA) was introduced from the last academic year of 2024-2025. This initiative is to recognize and reward talented students who have excelled in sports. This program encourages deserving students to pursue higher education while continuing to excel in their sports,” the IIT Madras statement said.

The IIT Madras alumni and CSR partners have partnered together to offer financial support to 100% of BTech students whose annual parental income is in the ‘Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh' category for two consecutive years.

“The ‘Merit-cum-Means’ (MCM) Scholarship is one among the numerous financial assistance and scholarship support provided to students by IIT Madras, the Central and State Governments. SC/ST students admitted to the BTech program are exempted from paying tuition fees, irrespective of their parental income,” the IIT Madras statement adds.
