NEW DELHI: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and central universities are gearing up for Independence Day 2021 with a host of events as part of the government’s “Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav”. On Friday, Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), and Jawaharlal Nehru University organised the “Fit India Freedom Run 2”. IIT Bombay will have the run tomorrow. IIT Madras organised a lecture as part of a series in the lead up to Independence Day.

Here is what the IITs and central universities are doing:

Jamia Millia Islamia On Independence Day: Jamia Millia Islamia today organised a Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 to celebrate the upcoming Independence Day. Students and staff members of the university participated in the run. The event started with a rendering of the National Anthem.

TNajma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, in her speech thanked all the participants for coming to the event despite the Covid pandemic. She congratulated and advised students to stay strong and fit to build a better future for the country.

The run happened around the campus and ended at the mausoleum of the President of India and Zakir Husain.

Indian Independence Day and JNU: Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Vice-Chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar, flagged off the Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 on campus. “Students, faculty and staff members of JNU participated with lots of enthusiasm,” said a social media post from the university’s official account.


75th Independence Day at Delhi University: Cadets from the National Cadet Corps cleaned the status of freedom fighters and martyrs and paid homage to them. The Vice-Chancellor and registrar “placed wreaths on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on behalf of university fraternity”, said a social media post.


IIT Bombay celebrating Independence Day: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay will hold the “Freedom run” tomorrow, August 14. In line with the prime minister Narendra Modi’s campaign for fitness, the race will happen across the campus of IIT-B with staff and students entering separate competitions and women and men also getting separate races, said a statement from IIT Bombay. Registration is limited to around 100 people to allow for COVID-19 protocols.


IIT Madras for Independence Day: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is organising a webinar series on “Self-reliant India”. IIT Madras is organising Self-Reliant India: Discussions and Dialogue for Human Innovations (SIDDHI) webinar series to celebrate the 75th Independence anniversary of India. The webinar is scheduled for August 14 and will start at 6pm.
