NEW DELHI: The international non-profit, Michael and Susan Dell Foundation (MSDF), is helping the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi run online classes by funding the institute’s initiative to provide computing devices and internet access to students who didn’t have them.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, IIT Delhi will run both semesters of the 2020-21 academic year in online mode, an official notice said. The remaining second semester in the 2019-20 academic year was also shifted to online mode after all educational institutes were shut down in March.

The shift, as per IIT Delhi, has become unaffordable for a “small but significant number of students” without necessary devices and internet connection.

“IIT Delhi, as a student-friendly institution, believes that students in need must get all the necessary support. In several discussions in the Covid-19 working group and other forums, it was proposed that we support as many students as possible to overcome the challenges they face due to the pandemic,” said V. Ramgopal Rao, director, IIT Delhi. Rao also extended his gratitude to MSDF to support students in times of need.

elp access online education, the institute had provided devices like laptop, smartphone, tablet and high-speed internet connection to students from economically weaker sections. The alumni of IIT Bombay also donated Rs 1.25 crore for laptop and broadband connection for students taking online classes and IIT Kanpur had organised a fundraiser.
