NEW DELHI: Late on Thursday night, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, IIT Delhi, announced that it was cancelling “all classes, examinations and public gatherings” till March 31, 2020. This was done to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The count of confirmed cases of coronavirus infections rose to 74 on Thursday, including six in Delhi. The World Health Organisation, WHO, declared a coronavirus pandemic.
In a late-night post on social media, IIT Delhi director, V Ramgopal Rao wrote: “In view of the COVID situation, IIT Delhi has decided to cancel all classes, examinations and public gatherings with immediate effect on the campus until March 31, 2020. Earlier in the day, he had written to students and staff informing them that “all class work and examinations at IIT Delhi are suspended with immediate effect”. He further told them to “refrain from organising any event on the campus during this period that requires gathering of people”. His letter further directed staff and students to “seek special permission through an appropriate authority of the institute” before travelling abroad for official reasons. International students studying at the campus will be allowed to remain and “basic mess facilities will be available”.
