JMI’s invention ‘Artificial Intelligence based dustbin’ receives Australian patent

NEW DELHI: The Jamia Millia Islamia faculty’s invention ‘Artificial Intelligence based dustbin’ has received patent as an intellectual property by the Patent Office, Government of Australia. The AI based dustbin has been invented by JMI faculty Dr Mansaf Alam and his team.

“Dr. Kiran Chaudhary, Shivaji College, DU, and researchers from other institutes were also part of the team. Dr Alam is Associate Professor, Big Data, Cloud Computing, and IoT Laboratory, Department of Computer Science, JMI,” an official statement from JMI said.

The main objective of the invention titled ‘Artificial Intelligence Based Dustbin’ is to make dustbin smart by enabling it to detect harmful objects like explosives, radioactive materials etc. thrown in it. Sensors are fixed with the dustbin which will intimate by sending signals about any harmful objects dumped in it, the JMI statement said.

Alam said: “We developed this dustbin keeping in mind the security aspect making the dustbin behave like human beings and work intelligently with the help of artificial intelligence. It will surely be a useful product for society.”

Recently, 16 JMI researchers were listed among the top 2 percent scientists in the world. The list was prepared by a team of experts led by Professor John Ioannidis, the eminent Professor at Stanford University and published by Elsevier BV.

Two separate lists were released by Stanford University. The first coveted list is based on career-long data in which 8 JMI professors found their place. The second list for the year 2020 performance has as many as 16 scientists from JMI.

Recently, JMI ranked in the 100-200 bracket in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022.

Moreover, Jamia Millia Islamia secured sixth rank among the ‘Top 10 Universities’ of the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-2021.
