Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has extended online classes until November 24, 2026, citing the campus situation and concerns over safety and security. The university has also announced that practical and viva examinations for the odd semester will be held online from November 25 to 30, while theory examinations will be conducted online between December 1 and 24.

According to the latest notice, the decision was taken at a meeting of deans, heads of departments, directors and officials held at the FTK-Centre for Information Technology (FTK-CIT). Jamia said the campus situation was not suitable for normal academic activities. The revised schedule also states that the winter vacation for the 2026–27 academic session will start from December 25 to January 12, 2027. Classes for the even semester are scheduled to begin on January 13, 2027.

The announcement has come after the protest by student groups demanding a fixed timeline for Students’ Union elections. The protesters have been asking for a written commitment from the university administration on drafting and approving the Students’ Union Constitution and completing the election process.

JMI students continue hunger strike over union elections

In another statement issued by AIDSO, AISA, AIRSO, DISHA, the Fraternity Movement, MSF, SFI and SIO, along with United Students of Jamia, on the negotiations, student groups said a delegation of teachers led by the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences had discussions with student representatives and indicated that a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) would be arranged. However, the students alleged that the promised meeting did not take place.

The protesters have demanded that the Students’ Union Constitution be drafted and approved by December 20, with the election date announced within 15 days of approval and the election process completed by February 5. They also demanded an assurance that no disciplinary action would be taken against those participating in the protest.

According to the student groups, the administration later conveyed a revised proposal verbally, under which the draft Constitution would be completed by December 20, approved within 20 days of drafting, and followed by the announcement of the election date within 15 days. The students said the proposal had no written commitment.

The groups further alleged that discussions were halted before their demand for a direct meeting with the VC was addressed. They have said the hunger strike and sit-in will continue until the administration provides a firm commitment.
