Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will restart offline classes and examinations for all undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes from November 2, the university said in the latest official announcement released on October 29. The move comes in the backdrop of ongoing student protests demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) and the announcement of an election schedule.

The university had earlier extended online classes until November 24 and announced that practical and viva examinations for the odd semester would be conducted online amid the agitation. However, in its latest order, the administration has directed all departments and faculties to resume physical academic activities from Monday, November 2.

As per the notice issued by the Office of the Registrar, all classes will be conducted in offline mode according to the respective department and faculty timetables. All examinations, including mid-semester, end-semester and other scheduled examinations, will also be held in offline mode only.

Students have been advised to attend classes and appear for examinations according to the schedules and instructions issued by their respective departments and faculties. The university has also made regular attendance mandatory and asked students to adhere to its academic rules and regulations. Deans, heads of departments, directors of centres and other concerned authorities have been directed to make the necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of offline classes and examinations, including classroom facilities, seating arrangements and invigilation.

JMI students' union constitution deadline

The latest order comes against the backdrop of an 18-day student agitation over demands to restore the JMISU and announce an election schedule. Earlier yesterday, the university administration set May 15, 2027, as the deadline to finalise the students' union constitution and urged protesting students to call off their hunger strike and demonstrations.

The administration also agreed to revoke ongoing show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, rustication, suspensions and campus-ban orders linked to the protest period. According to the university's earlier communication, student union elections will be conducted in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines within six weeks of the commencement of the academic session or within 15 days of the final approval of the union constitution.

The university had been witnessing protests over the absence of student union elections, which have remained suspended for nearly two decades. Teachers have attributed the dissolution of the union to recurring incidents of violence and attacks on faculty members, including the then vice-chancellor. The JMI administration had also alleged vandalism on campus during the agitation, claiming that gates and CCTV systems were damaged.

The latest notice, issued by Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, has been approved by the Vice-Chancellor and directs all concerned authorities to ensure compliance with the order.
