Jammu and Kashmir government has doubled the monthly stipend to Rs 25,000 from Rs 12,300 for medical interns

Amid the agitation strike by medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has increased the monthly stipend for MBBS, BDS and foreign medical graduates (FMGs). J-K has doubled the monthly stipend to Rs 25,000 from Rs 12,300 for medical interns in the union territory.
The announcement came through a government order issued by the commissioner/secretary to the government, health and medical education department.
“Sanction is hereby accorded to the enhancement of the monthly stipend payable to MBBS/BDS interns, including foreign medical graduates (FMGs), in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000 per month, with effect from January 1, 2026," the order reads.
The medical interns resumed their strike, saying that despite the deadline having passed, the government has not fulfilled its assurance. On September 8, the J&K government asked the interns to end their strike and sought a month to address their issues. The decision came after nearly 40 days of pressure for a hike in the monthly stipend by medical interns. However, students were seeking an increase of Rs 30,000.
Several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, have increased the monthly stipend for MBBS students. Moreover, Chhattisgarh and Bihar have also increased the stipend for PG medical and dental students.
