JEE Advanced 2021: IIT Delhi to offer BTech in energy engineering

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has planned to establish a new department of energy science and engineering under its Centre for Energy Studies (CES) and offer a new undergraduate degree programme, BTech in energy engineering, starting from 2021-2022 academic session with an intake of 40 students. Students will be admitted through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced.

The Institute’s board has approved the conversion of the Centre for Energy Studies into a department of energy science and engineering.

“Besides continuing with three existing MTech. programmes (including one sponsored by the International Solar Alliance for working fellows from different countries) presently being offered by the Centre for Energy Studies,” states a release from IIT Delhi. “The department will offer academic programmes in the field of energy to prepare required manpower at all levels, attract the best faculty, students and staff and provide a platform for active and effective collaboration among faculty colleagues across the Institute and with other institutions.”

Jobs in new BTech programme

Speaking of the new BTech programme, KA Subramanian, head of the CES, said: “The BTech programme in energy engineering is designed to equip the students with the necessary knowledge and skills to take up the energy sector challenges being faced by humanity - improving energy access, supply quality and reliability as well efficiency of utilization, de-carbonization, lowering the cost of energy supply etc.”

These BTech graduates are likely to find employment in the “core energy sector” and in organisations working on climate change, energy transition, access and security, said the statement. Plus, there will be ample opportunities to work abroad.
