NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India has adjourned the plea of candidates requesting an extra attempt in the JEE Advanced 2021 exam. The petition was filed by a group of candidates who exhausted their last attempt in JEE Advanced 2020. The request was made on the grounds of hardship faced by candidates in their preparation of JEE Advanced due to COVID-19 pandemic leading to poor performance in the exam.

As per Live Law report, a bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar heard the plea and proceeded to direct the Counsel for the Petitioner to wait for the judgement on an extra chance for UPSC candidates who had exhausted all their attempts in October 2020.

Justice Khanwilkar said that the same principle that would be applied in the UPSC matter, would also be applied in case of the JEE Advanced exam, the report said.

JEE Advanced exam is conducted once every year for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). As per the current rule, candidates can appear twice in JEE Advanced, once in the year in which the candidate passes his/her Class 12 exam and the second attempt in the next year.

Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2018 and were eligible for JEE Advanced 2020 are demanding this extra attempt in 2021.

Extra attempts in JEE Main 2021

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) - Main, conducted for admission in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs has increased the number of attempts for 2021 by holding the exam four times in a year. The exam will now be held in February, March, April and May. In line with the JEE Advanced, candidates can appear in JEE Main for three consecutive years, one in the year passing Class 12 and next in the following two years.
