OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has announced the launch of the Motwani Jadeja Institute for American Studies (MJIAS), backed by a Rs 44 crore, which is approximately 5 million US dollars, endowment from Asha Jadeja Motwani and the Motwani Jadeja Family Foundation. As per the institute, the donation is one of the largest philanthropic contributions to JGU and among the most significant investments in American Studies in India.

The institute has been named in memory of Rajeev Motwani, a Stanford University computer scientist whose mentorship played a key role in shaping the journey of Google’s founders and other innovators. The institute aims to emerge as a globally recognised centre for research, teaching and policy engagement focused on the United States. It will promote interdisciplinary research in American politics, law, economy, culture and technology.

The institute will also work to enhance collaboration between Indian and American universities, think tanks and civil society organisations. Other objectives include supporting comparative legal scholarship, improving public understanding of American innovation and global leadership, and encouraging student and faculty exchanges.

Academic and research initiatives

MJIAS will roll out a number of initiatives, including the annual Rajeev Motwani Memorial Lecture, the Rajeev Motwani Fellowship, a Master’s programme in American Studies, and an annual conference on the India-US Comprehensive Global Partnership.

Its broader strategic efforts will include setting up a tech-innovation hub, policy consultation forums, youth exchanges, sociocultural mobility initiatives and the creation of global indices aimed at advancing bilateral interests between India and the US.
