JNU to begin 2nd phase of PhD admission 2025 in December; JNUSU hunger strike enters day 10

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will begin the second phase of PhD admission for the academic session 2025-26 tentatively in December. The university will admit students through UGC or CSIR, JRF NET, DBT JRF, ICMR JRF, including other fellowships, as per an official statement.

The central university has also announced an extension of the hostel facilities for PhD scholars who are in the final phase of completing their thesis. “Students may apply for hostel extension by submitting "an undertaking duly signed from the concerned Supervisor, Chairperson and Dean of respective schools," the official statement reads.

Notably, the university administration clarified that the application for extension of the hostel facility will be considered on “humanitarian grounds and case-to-case basis.”

JNUSU Protest

The JNU Students Union (JNSU)’s hunger strike, demanding the restoration of the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for all PhD courses, has entered its 10th day.

The student body also backed candidates who were excluded from the PhD admission and appeared for the June 2025 University Grants Commission- National Eligibility Test (UGC NET).

“According to JNUSU, the move impacts a significant portion of the MA batch, limiting their chances for research admission. JNUSU President Nitish Kumar said the hostel extension was a consequence of the hunger strike,” the PTI reported.

"The administration, which was initially unwilling to listen, has now been forced to negotiate with the union and concede to our demands. They were compelled to release a notice for an extension during the holiday period when offices were closed. No one will be compelled to vacate the hostel during their study. We will fight for Hostel till PhD Submission," Kumar said in a statement reported by PTI.
