NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh will be contesting in the upcoming West Bengal elections, she announced through her social media account.

Ghosh, who hails from Durgapur in West Bengal, is a research scholar at JNU’s School of International Relations. She will be contesting the elections as a candidate of Communist Party of India (Marxist) from the Jamuria Legislative Assembly. She is a member of the party’s affiliated students’ group, Students Federation of India (SFI).

Ghosh is the incumbent president of JNUSU as student elections were not held in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdown.

“Will be contesting from Jamuria Legislative Assembly Seat as candidate of the CPI(M), supported by the Sanyukt Morcha. Requesting all of your support,” Ghosh said through her social media account.

Ghosh became a familiar face in the media during the protests against fee hikes in universities and the Citizenship Amendment Act. She was also in the spotlight during the violence at JNU when she received a gash on her skull in January 2020 when a mob of masked goons attacked college. Delhi Police had named her among the nine suspects in the JNU violence.

Former JNUSU presidents such as Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury and Kanhaiya Kumar had also gone on to participate in elections representing the Left.
