NEW DELHI: Karnataka government has decided to increase the incentives given to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students studying in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh, informed social welfare minister H C Mahadevappa on social media.
The state government has also made a decision to sanction Rs 25 lakh to students from SC community who got 95 marks in Karnataka Pre-University Certificate (PUC) examination and secured an MBBS seat under the management quota in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) UG counselling, without getting a seat under the government quota.
“Our government, which is working with faith in the words of Baba Saheb Ambedkar that an educated society can become a promising society, has been living up to its words. Now the government has decided to increase the incentive money given to SC/ST students studying in national institutions like IIT/IIM/IISC/NIT from 1 to 2 lakh, it wants the children of scheduled community to achieve more in higher institutions,” the minister said in a post on X.

The Ambedkarite believes that it should be common for scheduled communities to get higher education. This decision of the state government in this direction is very committed and there is no compromise in this matter, he claimed.
“I request all our young people to spread this much awaited scheme of the government to more and more people and create awareness among them,” Mahadevappa added.
