Karnataka proposes reservation of 15% govt seats in professional courses for rural students

The Karnataka government has proposed a 7.5% reservation for rural students from government schools and another 7.5% for those who studied in rural institutions.

The proposal notified by the Karnataka higher education department on September 5 is part of the draft amendments to the Karnataka Selection of Candidates for Admission to Government Seats in Professional Educational Institutions Rules, 2006.

Under the proposed amendment, of the 15% government-seat quota, 7.5% would be reserved horizontally for rural students who studied from Class 1 to 10 in government schools or government pre-university colleges managed by the Karnataka school education department located in rural areas.

The remaining 7.5% will be reserved for rural students who studied Classes 1 to 10 in educational institutions or schools situated in rural areas of the state, irrespective of whether they are government-run.

Karnataka invites suggestions, objections

Karnataka government said the draft has been published for the information of persons likely to be affected. The government has also invited objections and suggestions, which will be considered if received within 15 days of the draft's publication in the Official Gazette.

The proposed rules, to be called the Karnataka Selection of Candidates for Admission to Government Seats in Professional Educational Institutions (Amendment) Rules, 2026, will come into effect from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.

The amendment has been proposed under Section 14 of the Karnataka Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act, 1984. With inputs from PTI
