Lucknow: Nursing students at KGMU protest after fellow student dies of dengue

LUCKNOW: Nursing students at King George's Medical University (KGMU) protested here on Monday following the death of fellow student Divyanshi Yadav, allegedly due to dengue. The students also claimed that the KGMU administration pressures them to maintain attendance and denies medical leave, even when they are seriously ill.

A protesting student, unable to hold back her tears, told PTI Video, "My friend, a second-year BSc Nursing student here, died of dengue on Saturday. We study in the medical college, and yet we are dying here. I was unwell a week ago," she said. "If somebody is late by five minutes, the student is marked absent for the day. When there is no safety for us, how can we ensure safety for other patients?" the student said.

Another student present at the protest site told PTI Video that Divyanshi was suffering from dengue, but still attended college. "Despite being on a deathbed, she was tense about her attendance. Students are forced to come to the college daily to mark attendance, ignoring their medical conditions.

5-member committee

We have messages from teachers telling us to come to the college after taking medicine," he said. KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh said, "A five-member committee has been formed.

The committee members are Chief Medical Superintendent Dr BK Ojha; Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Prof Amita Pandey; Vice Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Prof Smriti Agarwal; Chief Proctor Prof RAS Kushwaha; and Principal of the College of Nursing Suchana Roy Bhowmik."
