Maharashtra government asks schools to form alumni associations for academics, infrastructural support

The Maharashtra government has urged all schools in the state to form alumni associations. The state government aims to involve former students in helping the schools, infrastructure, and support for student development.

These will include schools run by Zilla Parishads and municipal corporations, as well as aided and unaided private ones. In all schools in the state, from Class 1 to 12, the 'alumni associations' of the school will be brought together and established.

A government resolution (GR) was issued in this regard by the School Education and Sports Department on October 1. The alumni associations will be expected to contribute to the academic, infrastructural, cultural, and social development of their respective schools.

Maharashtra: 'Alumni association' in schools

According to the Maharashtra government resolution, every school from Class 1 to 12 will set up an alumni association, and these associations will include former students as well as advisory members such as the school principal, one teacher, a parent representative, and education department officials.

Further, the main responsibilities of these alumni associations will include helping improve school facilities like libraries, labs, toilets, and digital tools. They will also organize expert talks, competitions, and guidance sessions for competitive exams. In addition, they will support activities related to sports, culture, and digital learning.

Composition of the committee

Each alumni association has to conduct at least two meetings every year, either online or in person. Alumni reunions or gatherings should also be organised annually, preferably during school events or festivals, with prior notice given at least 15 days in advance, as per the GR.

"If necessary, the meeting of this committee can be organized by the committee through online system or an offline method, as per the convenience of the members. The members will be registered in each school through the online system provided by the government , and a list of members shall be maintained at the school level, " the GR reads.

"To ensure transparency, schools have been advised to avoid direct cash transactions and maintain proper accounts of any contributions received from alumni. Outstanding alumni may also support meritorious students through awards and scholarships. Education officials at the state, divisional and district levels will monitor and guide the formation and functioning of these associations," it said.

The government also plans to launch an online platform for alumni registration and tracking their activities. This initiative aims to strengthen the bond between former students and their schools, promote community involvement, and encourage joint efforts to improve the quality of school education across Maharashtra.
