According to the Maharashtra State Cell, a total of 11,293 (98.79%) students got admission in MBBS and BDS in the state through Maharashtra NEET UG counselling 2026 this year. Notably, zero MBBS seats have remained unfilled in the past three years during the Maharashtra NEET UG counselling rounds. However, this year, a total of 138 MBBS and BDS seats still vacant after final round of counselling.
For the academic year 2026-27, MBBS admission stands at 99.04% of available seats, while BDS admissions at 97.93%.
A total of 11,431 seats were available for admission across 99 medical colleges in Maharashtra. Of these, 11,293 seats (98.79%) were filled by students, while the remaining 138 seats remained vacant.
Previously, admissions for MBBS and BDS degree courses through the State CET Cell consisted of three rounds of the centralized admission process (CAP) and one stray vacancy round. After this, the remaining vacant seats were filled at the institutional level. During the process, several complaints were made by students to the CET Cell.
Therefore, from this year onwards, the government’s Ministry of Medical Education changed the admission rules and decided that admissions for all rounds will be conducted through the CET Cell. Because of this, the State Cell conducted the admissions for MBBS and BDS courses this year through six rounds of admission: three CAP and three stray vacancy rounds.
Consequently, no student complaints were made during the MBBS and BDS admissions, the press release said.
The Bombay High Court (HC) has recently rejected a plea by a private medical college to hold institution-level counselling to fill up vacant MBBS seats in the state.
