Maharashtra repeals no-fail policy in Class 5, 8; annual exam in April

Students will have to get 35 percent to pass the Maharashtra Classes 5 and 8 exams.

NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra School Education and Sports Department has repealed the no-fail policy in Classes 5 to 8. The schools in Maharashtra will now be able to conduct annual exams for Classes 5 and 8.

As per a government resolution (GR), students appearing for the Classes 5 and 8 exams will have to get at least 35 percent to clear the annual exams. The exams will be conducted in the second week of April 2024, the resolution added.

Students failing in one or more subjects can appear for the Vidarbha region, which will be held in the second week of June. In the rest of Maharashtra, the Classes 5 and 8 compartment exam in the first week of June.

The Maharashtra government amended the Right to Education Act of 2009 as per the central government guidelines in June. The new amendment allows the students to be detained in the same class if he fails in the Class 5 and 8 exams.

The Class 5 questions paper of each subject will be of 50 marks paper with 10 marks for oral exams. Class 8 students will have to appear for a 60-mark paper with 10 marks for orals.

Students in class 5 will appear for— three language exams, mathematics and environmental studies 1 and 2, and students in class 8 will take three language exams, mathematics, sciences, and social sciences.

The department said the question paper will have to be set in the schools. The board will provide sample questions to assist the teachers.
