NEW DELHI: Meghalaya private colleges and state government aided colleges are now exempted from appearing for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET 2022) exams. Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma thanked the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan for “his positive response” and said “this addresses the concerns of students of our state to a great extent”.

The Meghalaya CM wrote on Twitter, “Thank Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for his positive response to our request to exempt non-centrally funded/private colleges & State Govt aided colleges from appearing for the CUET exams. This addresses the concerns of students of our State to a great extent.”

The chief minister had earlier written to the education minister regarding CUET and informed him that “Meghalaya has 12 districts and the identified exam centre for CUET is only in Shillong which would likely to cater 25,000 aspirants from across the state. This scenario is likely to cost distress and anxiety among students, especially from outlying districts.”

He also urged the minister to give the state ample time to prepare and spread awareness among Class 12 students regarding the common entrance test for undergraduate admission in central universities.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made it compulsory for students seeking admission to central universities to appear in the CUET exams. It also asked the state-run and private universities to consider the CUET score or admission from this year.
