MP R Sudha urges health minister JP Nadda to expedite NEET PG 2024 counselling process

NEW DELHI: Sudha Ramakrishnan, member of parliament representing Mayiladuthurai, has formally wrote a letter to union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda to expedite the NEET PG 2024 counselling process, citing unrest among over 200,000 MBBS doctors who are awaiting their exam results. R Sudha expressed her concerns in a post on X, where she highlighted the delay in publishing individual marks for the NEET PG 2024, which was conducted in August.

In her letter to JP Nadda, Sudha highlighted that although the National Board of Examinations (NBE) released partial results on August 23, including percentile scores and national ranks, the individual marks of the candidates is yet to be disclosed. This lack of information is hampering state governments from adding incentive marks for in-service doctors, particularly those serving in remote and difficult areas.

NEET PG 2024 Controversy: Problem with awarding incentive marks

“In Tamil Nadu, doctors serving in such remote and difficult terrains are awarded upto the maximum of 30 marks, at the rate of 10 marks for every year served in such remote areas. Now, without the individual PG-NEET marks of those doctors being made available, how will states like Tamil Nadu add the incentive marks and prepare a rank list for state quota seats in PG medical courses?”, R Sudha wrote in the letter.

NEET PG 2024 Exam: Varying difficulty levels of question papers

The NEET PG 2024 exam was postponed multiple times and held on August 11. Concerns were raised by candidates regarding the differing difficulty levels of the two sets of question papers used in the morning and evening shifts. Sudha criticized the NBE for not providing a clear rationale for this approach, which has led to confusion and dissatisfaction among the medical community.

NEET PG 2024: Key demands outlined in the letter

Sudha’s letter outlined specific requests aimed at addressing the situation, including:

1. Urging the Union Government to inform the Supreme Court that the NBE will release complete results, including individual marks, percentile and ranks.

2. Requesting the NBE to publish results for both exam shifts separately to clarify the discrepancies.

3. Calling for an immediate announcement of the NEET PG 2024 counselling schedule to facilitate state governments in preparing their respective rankings.

4. Suggesting the withdrawal of a clause in the 2024 PG-NEET prospectus that disallows state governments from awarding incentive marks for in-service doctors in challenging terrains.

The letter read, “Withdraw a clause in the 2024 PG-NEET prospectus which disallow state governments from earmarking incentive marks for in-service doctors who serve in remote, hill and difficult terrains. The legality and the constitutionality of such incentive marks have been squarely upheld by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in the past.’’

5. Encouraging the union government to facilitate a swift resolution to the ongoing Supreme Court case regarding the release of individual scores.

Appeal for timely action

Sudha emphasized that implementing the above-mentioned measures would alleviate the anxiety and stress faced by the thousands of doctors awaiting clarity on their future educational prospects. The letter read, “If these remedial measures are initiated by the Union Government before and during the hearing of the pending PG-NET-2024 related case in the Hon'ble Supreme Court, the 2 lakh doctors who wrote the examination will be relieved of the stress and anxiety over their further education.”
