NEW DELHI: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has invited applications for four-year integrated programme for transition to the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). Institutions wanting transition from the BA BEd or BSc BEd programmes can apply on the official website, ncte.gov.in.

“In light of the NCTE (Amendment) Regulations 2024, NCTE hereby invites applications for transition from the institutions which have been granted recognition by NCTE to run the 4-year integrated programme (BA BEd/ BSc BEd). The institutions desirous for transition to ITEP may apply on the online transition module in the NCTE website within the stipulated time,” said the council in an official notice.

NCTE informed that the last academic session for admission of students to 4-year integrated programmes shall be 2024-25. No fresh admissions shall be made in these courses thereafter. Those students who have been enrolled under the 2024-25 session will be allowed to complete their courses. “The 4-year integrated BSc BEd/BA BEd programme shall be discontinued from the academic session 2025-26.

ITEP implementation

The recognized units and streams of the 4-year integrated programmes will remain the same. The institutions who want transition to ITEP may opt for middle or the secondary stage, NCTE said.

“If any institution, which is not recognized by the NCTE, applies for transition; the application shall be outrightly rejected and any fees paid by such institution shall be forfeited,” the council warned.

Last year, NCTE launched the ITEP in 57 Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) for the previous academic session. ITEP is a four-year dual-major holistic undergraduate degree offering BA BEd, BSc BEd and BCom BEd programmes. This course will prepare teachers for the four stages of the new school structure: foundational, preparatory, middle and secondary (5+3+3+4).

While academics urged the University of Delhi (DU) to drop the plans of replacing its BElEd programme with ITEP, the university’s academic council passed the programme.
