NEW DELHI: The Department of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh has announced to add 1,300 MBBS seats in government medical colleges in the state. Moreover, 13 new medical colleges will begin the first academic session from this year 2023-24.
“In a big development to the medical education sector, 1300 MBBS seats will be increased in government medical colleges of UP. 13 new medical colleges will be started from the new session 2023-24. Health systems will be better in the state, as well as the education and career opportunities for the youth will increase,” the medical education department said.
Currently, there are a total of 3,828 seats. With the addition of 1,300 MBBS seats, the number of seats will increase to 5,128 seats.
The UP medical education department also informed that it has appointed principals for 13 new medical colleges which will be functional from this year. “Youth will get accessible health services along with better education,” it added.

As per the government data, there has been an 67% increase in medical colleges, 87% increase in MBBS seats and 105% increase in PG seats, the Union minister of state for health and family welfare, Bharati Pravin Pawar said in December. Uttar Pradesh currently has 65 medical colleges, 35 of them government.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET), Uttar Pradesh conducts UP NEET counselling 2023 for MBBS, BDS admissions through NEET scores. The UP MBBS admissions 2023 are granted to candidates under 85% state quota seats offered by 32 medical and 23 dental colleges.

In the last year’s UP Budget, the Yogi Adityanath-led government allocated Rs 500 crore to increase MBBS and postgraduate medical seats. Additionally, Rs 2,100 crore was earmarked for new medical colleges in 14 districts including Bijnor, Kushinagar, Gonda, and Sultanpur. Another Rs 25 crore for a new nursing college.
