NEET PG Counselling: Maharashtra’s student body seeks probe into 'mass admission cancellation' at NITIMS

Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) has sought a fresh probe into “mass admission cancellation” at Dr NY Tasgaonkar Institute of Medical Science (NITIMS) in round 3 of NEET PG counselling 2025. Several aspirants had requested to withdraw their PG seats after enrolling under the NRI quota in NITIMS, a private medical college in Maharashtra.

In a letter to the State CET Cell, the student’s body's Pune leader Anand Bapat said that the complaint reveals facts about “systematic and premeditated manipulation” of the centralised medical admission process and “abuse” of judicial process, only to convert merit-based public seats into “institutionally controlled” admissions.

Earlier, NITIMS petitioned the Bombay High Court (HC) for a special institute-level round to fill the vacant seats. Later, the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (Maha CET) Cell sought an inquiry into the “mass cancellation” of admissions of 18 students.

An official from State Cell said that they received an email from the college stating that 18 candidates had cancelled their seats ; however, it's not clear whether any penalty had to be paid for leaving their seats or not, as per the admission rules, Careers360 had reported earlier.

NEET PG: ‘Organised seat blocking’, alleges student’s body

As per the official statement, the student body has alleged that such a pattern cannot arise in merit based counselling process and indicates “pre-arranged” admissions facilitated through the institution.

“The admissions were clearly not genuine admissions but a temporary occupation of seats for blocking purposes. After the retention of seats, the official vacancy matrix reflected zero vacancies for NITIMS.”

The student body added that “organised seat blocking” leads to “statutory violations" and is equivalent to admission fraud and abuse of the admission process.

The student body further alleged that the institution filed a writ petition in the Bombay HC even before the admission cancellations took place, which is direct evidence of “prior information.” The vacancies were “not accidental but pre-engineered,” it added.

Student body urges NMC to intervene

The student body has requested the National Medical Commission (NMC) for “immediate special investigation” into the admission irregularities, and initiate disciplinary action. It has further requested admission records of students, demand draft transactions, and to investigate the writ petition filed by the institute.

However, in the event of failure to initiate immediate action, the student’s body shall be constrained to approach the High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution of India seeking court-monitored investigation in cancellation of admissions, independent inquiry and regulatory direction.

The incident took place several months after the Maha CET Cell identified that about 220 UG medical applicants had submitted applications with forged or missing documents , leading to their disqualification from the admission process.

Officials also discovered that some of these candidates had already secured seats through the AIQ or in other states through the MCC NEET Counselling 2025, raising allegations of a coordinated attempt at “seat blocking.”
