NEW DELHI: With an increase in MBBS seats from 50,000 in 2014 to 1,07,000 now, the demand for medical courses is at an all time high. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the single-largest medical entrance exam on May 5 for nearly 25 lakh medical aspirants. As students get ready for NEET UG exam 2024, here’s the NEET cut-off trends for north-eastern medical colleges.

There are a total of seven states in north-east India - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura. Admission to these colleges will also be done by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the 15% All India Quota (AIQ).
According to an official order issued by the ministry of health and family welfare, the Union government has constituted a 14-member committee to make relevant recommendations for setting up of new medical colleges by utilising existing hospital infrastructure.
In the latest update, the NEET UG admit card 2024 is expected to be issued soon on the official websites, exams.nta.ac.in/NEET and neet.ntaonline.in. Students who have registered to take NEET UG 2024 exam will be allotted exam centres in 557 cities across India and 14 cities abroad.

The Arunachal Pradesh cabinet in February approved an additional 39 faculty posts at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), the only medical college in the northeastern state. The decision was taken after the MBBS seats were increased to 100. Here’s the list of AP medical colleges and the closing ranks, as per past trends.

In December 2023, the Assam cabinet decided to reserve 5 percent of seats in medical colleges for students who studied in government schools from Class 7 to 12. The National Medical Commission (NMC) last year extended the recognition of two medical colleges in the state for another 5 years. Assam Medical College and Guwahati Medical College have 170 and 156 MBBS seats respectively.

The Assam cabinet had also proposed 10% reservation for NRI, NRI-sponsored candidates who have cleared NEET after deduction of 15% AIQ and other quota.
Manipur has two government medical colleges - Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompet, Imphal. Both the institutes have 100 MBBS seats each. Candidates should also note that there is no private medical college in the state.
The Union government has approved an increase of 50 more MBBS seats in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) last year. Last year, Rs 64,000 budget was sanctioned under the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and Meghalaya has been allocated Rs 150 crore for the next four years.
