NEW DELHI: The fate of 50 students admitted into the JIET Medical College and Hospital remains unknown as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has informed the MBBS students that their admissions are subject to the outcome of the plea pending before the Supreme Court. The commission issued a notice for the concerned students following the top court’s directions.

In a special leave petition filed by the commission, the apex court issued a notice on March 3 and directed, “The petitioners shall be at liberty to publish a general notice informing the students who have been admitted against additional 50 seats re: the pendency of these proceedings.”

NMC had approached the SC against an order of a division bench of the Rajasthan High Court, announced on December 11 last year, which allowed an increase of MBBS seat intake from 50 to 100 in the private medical college. Relying on a single-judge order, the college argued that it had already completed the MBBS admissions, through the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET UG) counselling 2024, by the time judgment was announced.

On October 25, 2024, the commission notified that it made a second appeal before the division bench of the HC against the orders in the writ petition. The high court had asked NMC to issue the Letter of Permission (LoP) to the medical college for 100 MBBS seats.

“In compliance of the aforesaid direction of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, the Student Concerned (i.e. those who are admitted over and above the 50 permitted seats in JIET Medical College & Hospital, Jodhpur) and all other stakeholders in the matter is hereby informed that the admission of students against the additional 50 seats (i.e. over and above the 50 permitted seats) in the JIET MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL, JODHPUR is subject to the outcome of the Special Leave Petition No. 5259/2025 pending before the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India,” said NMC in the latest notification.
