NIRF India Engineering Rankings 2018 – Some surprises but IIT Madras still tops the chart

NEW DELHI, APRIL 3: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2018 for the engineering institutes show surprising topples and exchange of places in comparison with 2017 Rankings. The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has retained its top position with a score of 88.95, followed by IIT Bombay with a score of 84.82.
Speaking about this achievement, Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “The ranking is an affirmation of the consistent hard work of our faculty, staff and students and the zeal with which we are implementing and exceeding the targets of our Strategic Plan 2020. IIT Madras leads in research as well as industry collaboration anchored by its hugely successful Research Park. Its students and scholars get placed in the best companies and research institutions worldwide. We will continue to forge ahead with the same energy to achieve ever greater heights.”
IIT Delhi and Kharagpur have exchanged positions with Delhi coming at third this time and IIT Kharagpur shifting to the fourth position. IIT Hyderabad has climbed a step to the ninth place followed by Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai (ICT- Mumbai) which has risen to the 10th place from previous year's 14th position.
In the newly added category of Architecture this year in NIRF, IIT Roorkee’s Department of Architecture and Planning has been ranked number two. The Institute has also been ranked nine among top Management Institutes in the country.
Speaking about the rankings,Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee , said, “We are delighted to be one of only two institutions in the country which have been ranked in the top ten in four different categories. It is a matter of pride and happiness that our overall rank has improved from last year. We will continue to work with dedication to achieve even better results next year”.
Jadavpur University has fallen down three ranks from ninth to twelfth position. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has climbed up to the thirteenth rank from an earlier twenty third rank. Other rank losing institutes in the top 25 include NIT Rourkela, VIT University, BITS-Pilani.
Other major rank losers include IIEST-Shibpur; Jamia Millia Islamia; College of Engineering, Pune; Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) while IIT-BHU; Thapar University and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST- Thiruvananthapuram) have found a place in the top 25.
