NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru retained its position as the best university in India this year as well, as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2023) announced by the ministry of education. IISc Bengaluru has been awarded the best university in the NIRF India Rankings 2023 since its inception. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) bagged the second and third place respectively.
The top three institutes have retained their position Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) were placed in second and third position. It is the second-time in a row that the JMI has been ranked in the top 3.
Jadavpur University and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) ranked in the top 5. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham got fourth and fifth respectively in the previous year. From 3,500 colleges in 2016, the number of participating institutes has increased to 8,686 this year.

The Union minister of state (MoS) education minister and external affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh announced the 8th edition of NIRF ranking 2023 for 12 categories including engineering, medical, MBA. Agriculture and allied sectors category has been included this year.
Teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, peer perception are the six parameters based on which NIRF rankings 2023 are announced.
