PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate Rs 390 crore NIT Goa permanent campus tomorrow

NIT Goa can accommodate 1,260 students. The institute has started taking classes for even semester students from January 8 at the permanent campus.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the permanent campus of National Institute of Technology Goa (NIT Goa) tomorrow. The new campus has been set up of 70750 sqm, with construction cost of Rs 390.83 crore.

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradesh, Goa governor Sreedharan Pillai, chief minister Pramod Sawant, Union minister of state for ports, shipping, waterways and tourism Shripad Naik; MP of South Goa Francisco Sardinha; and Leader of Opposition and MLA from Cuncolim Yuri Alemao will also be present during the inaugural event.

Since it was founded in 2010, NIT Goa has been functioning at its transit campus within the premises of Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi. On December 15, 2018, the then chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone in the presence of former Union Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar. Parrikar wanted to establish an institute of national importance in the state.

“In May 2019, the planning for construction of NIT Goa campus was started with CPWD as Project Monitoring Committee and the first phase of the work in 46 acres of land was conceived. The construction of the campus has been done using RCC Precast 3S Technology,” the ministry said.

The construction of the campus at Cuncolim, South Goa with the help of the ministry of education was completed in 2023. NIT Goa can accommodate 1,260 students. The new campus also provides facilities like tutorial complex, departmental complex, seminar complex, administrative complex, hostels, health centre, staff quarters, amenity centre, and sports ground among other utilities.

The institute started taking classes for the even semester from January 8 at the permanent campus. Hostel accommodation has been made available only for the students who had opted for the hostel facility during the odd semester of academic year (AY) 2023-24, the latest notification issued by the institute read.
