NLSIU to hold 34th annual convocation on October 17

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) will conduct its 34th annual convocation on October 17, after postponing the ceremony that was earlier scheduled for September 12. The university had cancelled the September ceremony last month, citing “unavoidable circumstances”.

In an email to students, the NLSIU Registrar said the decision to hold the convocation in October was approved at the 107th meeting of the Executive Council and the 40th meeting of the General Council on September 9. The two governing bodies, chaired by the Chief Justice of India in his capacity as NLSIU Chancellor, approved the proposal to conduct the 34th Annual Convocation on October 17, 2026.

Detailed schedule, instructions shortly

The councils also decided that all graduating students would be formally awarded their degrees on October 17, either in person or in absentia. The university said the detailed programme schedule and other instructions would be communicated separately.

The earlier cancellation of the September 12 ceremony came amid opposition from NLSIU students and alumni over the proposed participation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Bar Council of India Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra.

In a statement issued on August 15, NLSIU students and alumni had criticised the now-withdrawn BCI order seeking to stop the enrolment of students from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. They also expressed solidarity with the NALSAR students, who, according to the statement, had demonstrated courage and moral conviction in speaking out over the police assault on protesting students in Delhi.

NLSIU notice does not clarify whether CJI Surya Kant will attend the October 17 convocation. When the September ceremony was cancelled, the university had said that all graduating students would be conferred their degrees in absentia after the necessary approvals from its governing bodies. The latest decision now formally schedules the convocation for October 17, with graduates to receive their degrees either in person or in absentia.
