NMC Seat Matrix: 9,911 more MBBS seats for 2026-27; over 78% of them in private medical colleges

NMC has approved and published the seat matrix ahead of the NEET 2026 results and counselling. Government medical colleges have added around 2,000 seats.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has published the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 admission cycle, announcing a total of 1,36,939 seats for NEET UG counselling. The medical education regulator has added 9,911 new MBBS seats this year, with more than 78% of the increase in private medical colleges.

A total of 63,296 seats are available in government medical colleges, while 73,643 seats are offered by private medical colleges. Compared to the previous year, the total number of MBBS seats has increased by 9,911, providing more admission opportunities for NEET UG aspirants.

The MBBS seat matrix does not include seats offered by Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS, JIPMER and other centrally governed medical institutions.

Government MBBS seats rise to 63,296

A total of 2,111 government MBBS seats have been added for the 2026-27 academic session, taking the overall intake to 63,296 seats. West Bengal recorded the highest increase with 325 new seats, followed by Chhattisgarh with 250 seats, Andhra Pradesh with 225 seats and Bihar 190 seats.

Private MBBS seats reach 73,643

A total of 7,800 MBBS seats have been added in private medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic session, increasing the total private MBBS intake to 73,643 seats. Karnataka saw the highest addition with 1,150 seats, followed by Rajasthan with 900 seats, Tamil Nadu with 800 seats, Uttar Pradesh with 800 seats, Telangana with 700 seats and Bihar and West Bengal with 500 seats each.

The NMC has directed all medical colleges to ensure MBBS admissions are made only against the seats approved by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for the 2026-27 academic year. It said admissions exceeding the approved intake are not allowed.
