PM Modi announces 75,000 medical seats in next 5 years, says ‘need not go abroad’

Independence Day 2024: PM Narendra Modi said the country welcomes foreign students to study in India. Around 25,000 youths every year go abroad for medical education.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Union government wants to build such an education system in the country so that youngsters need not have to go abroad for studies. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day, PM Modi announced an additional 75,000 medical seats will be created in the next five years.

"We want to build such an education system in India that youngsters do not need to go abroad to study. In fact we would want foreign students to come here and study," PM Modi said during his Independence Day speech 2024.

"Even today, children, mostly belonging to the middle class, are going abroad for medical education. They spend lakhs and crores on medical education abroad. Around 25,000 youths every year go abroad for medical education and they go to such countries, I get surprised when I hear about them. So we have decided, 75,000 new seats will be created in the medical line in the next five years," Modi added.

On employment trends, "Today, new employment opportunities are knocking on the doors of India's youth. The country's youth are now leaping into a golden era and reaching new heights. If the youth of this country hold on to this opportunity with grit and hope of fulfilling their dreams, then we'll achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047," the minister said.

PM Narendra Modi said "India aims to promote skill development in all walks of life". In this regard, the provisions made in Union Budget 2024 will ensure a comprehensive development of youth and give impetus to the Skill India programme, he added.
