NEW DELHI: The Rajasthan secondary education department issued an official directive on January 23 asking district education authorities to hold regular surya namaskar practice sessions during school prayers. Skilled experts will train both teachers and students first and then students' parents, villagers, and public representatives will join to perform the surya namaskara collectively on February 15. The event is organised on the occasion of surya saptami.

The official notice mentions there should be separate practice for boys and girls in schools, and the health and age of students must be checked before the commencement of the surya namaskars practice sessions.

Background wave

The Times of India quotes state education minister Madan Dilawar as saying, "A student should practice surya namaskars every day after the morning prayers as we are able to do everything only due to sunlight. There will be a big programme on surya saptami, which will motivate people to exercise," Dilawar said.

"The preparation for the collective performance includes the collection of data on participants, aiming to set a 'world record", reads the order issued by the education department.
