NEW DELHI: Has justice been served in the RG Kar case? This is the question running on everyone’s minds after a sessions court in Kolkata pronounced the main accused Sanjay Roy “guilty” of raping and murdering an on-duty doctor. While the single-judge bench will announce his sentence on January 20, doctors across the country are demanding capital punishment for all the culprits involved.

Expressing dissatisfaction with just the conviction of Roy in RG Kar Medical College case, junior and senior doctors in state-run hospitals staged a rally, vowing to continue protesting till all the culprits are punished and the truth is revealed. The medics are demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) justice. "While Sanjay has been convicted, what about the other culprits? How could he have committed this crime?,” a doctor was quoted as saying.

RG Kar Case: Sanjay Roy’s attitude ‘shocking’

Meanwhile, several people expressed “shock” at the attitude of the accused in Kolkata rape-murder case. During the trial, Roy allegedly pleaded innocent and referred to his “Rudraksh” neckpiece as a representation.

In a detailed narration of the entire court room exchange in a video, a journalist expressed agitation and condemned Roy’s body language. He claimed that the Kolkata-horror accused has been tutored, but asked why after these many days. “My blood is boiling after seeing convict Sanjay Roy’s attitude inside the court room. Sanjay used “rudraksh mala” to his defence,” said Tamal Saha in a post on X.

On the other hand, members of the All India Trinamool Congress hailed the verdict and praised the “swift” action of the West Bengal government. Nilanjan Das, state general secretary, took to X and wrote, “After 160 days of baseless allegations, media trials, and conspiracies, Mamata Banerjee, Kolkata Police, and the state administration stand proven right. Kolkata Police’s swift action in just 5 days laid the groundwork for justice, showcasing their efficiency and commitment. Let’s pray for capital punishment to bring peace to Abhaya's family.”

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) demanded capital punishment to the culprit who raped and murdered “our sister” who was on duty at the government hospital. “We stand in solidarity with the family of the deceased and hope that justice is served,” it posted.
