Summer Vacation 2026: Schools closed for classes up to 8 in several districts of Bihar amid heatwaves

Across several parts of Bihar, the rising heat and ongoing heatwave have forced district administrations to step in with precautionary measures. The move is mainly to protect children from heat-related problems like dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke as temperatures continue to soar during the day.

In Vaishali, District Magistrate Mrs. Varsha Singh has ordered the closure of all government and private schools up to Class 8 from May 25 to May 31, 2026. The order also covers pre-schools and anganwadi centres in the district. Authorities have made it clear that the safety and health of students is the main concern while the heatwave conditions persist .

A similar decision has been taken in Saran district, where the District Magistrate has suspended classes up to Class 8 in all schools and institutions until May 27. The step is meant to reduce children’s exposure to the harsh afternoon heat. Officials pointed out that younger students are especially at risk because of travel and outdoor exposure during school hours.

The official notice reads, “All educational institutions in Saran district, including government and private schools, pre-schools, anganwadi centres, and coaching institutes, are ordered to completely suspend academic activities for classes 1 to 8 until 27.05.2026. At the same time, classes above Class 8 will be permitted to function only till 11:00 AM.”

Safety advisory

As per Times Now, schools and parents have been advised to take necessary precautions, including ensuring adequate hydration, wearing light cotton clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Health experts have also recommended increased water intake and limiting sun exposure to prevent heat-related complications among children. District administrations continue to monitor the evolving weather situation closely.

Delhi-NCR and Ghaziabad summer vacation

As per several media reports, schools in Delhi-NCR are expected to stay shut until June 30, with academic activities likely to resume from July 1. This extended break could amount to around 50–57 days of summer vacation in many institutions. Delhi government schools have already begun their summer break, although special remedial classes for students of Classes 9, 10, and 12 are being conducted in limited morning slots.

Meanwhile, schools under the Basic Education Council along with other education boards, including private schools, have closed the schools from May 23. Authorities have also made it clear that CBSE board examinations scheduled during this vacation period will proceed as per the existing timetable without any changes.
