SRM Medical College: 45 MBBS, 13 PG students selected for ICMR, central research grants

As many as 58 students from Sri Ramaswamy Memorial (SRM) Medical College Hospital and Research Centre have been selected for Union government research programmes and grants, the institution said. The selections include 45 MBBS students for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Short-Term Studentship (STS) Programme and 13 MD/MS students for various grants under the Human Resource Development (HRD) Scheme of the Department of Health Research (DHR).

The 45 MBBS students are from the first and second years of undergraduate medical education. Their research projects cover clinical, laboratory, diagnostic and community-based areas, including perioperative care, metabolic disorders, public health, pharmacology and emerging biomedical issues.

The students are working on projects across 18 departments under the guidance of faculty mentors.

SRM Medical College ICMR STS selection

According to SRM Medical College, more than 250 students from the institution applied for the ICMR STS programme, of whom 45 were selected. This resulted in an institutional selection rate of 18%.

Around 1,770 students from across India applied for the programme.

The ICMR STS programme provides undergraduate medical students with an opportunity to gain early research experience and develop skills in scientific inquiry, critical thinking and evidence-based healthcare.

13 SRM postgraduates selected for DHR grants

In addition to the undergraduate selections, 13 postgraduate students pursuing MD/MS programmes have been selected for various Union government grants under the DHR's HRD Scheme.

The institution reported a 52% selection rate, compared with a national average of 20%. More than 6,500 applications were received for the programme nationally.

The selected thesis proposals are from the departments of Microbiology, Anaesthesia, Community Medicine, Biochemistry, Ophthalmology, General Medicine and Paediatrics. Each selected proposal will receive grant support of Rs 1 lakh.

P. Satyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor (Academics), SRMIST, said the institution encourages students to engage with research and real-world problems alongside their academic studies.

The institute said the selections reflect its focus on introducing students to research early in their medical education and promoting research, innovation and interdisciplinary learning.
