The India Meteorological Department has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to become more severe between mid-May and June, prompting several state governments to extend school holidays or change class timings as a precautionary measure. Authorities said the decision was taken keeping in mind the health and safety of students amid rising temperatures.

In several northern and central states, mercury levels have already touched or crossed the 45-degree celsius mark, prompting education departments to take precautionary measures. States including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Telangana have either declared early summer breaks or reduced school hours in response to the rising temperatures.

To minimise heat exposure, authorities in parts of Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Noida and Ghaziabad shifted schools to morning timings, with classes being conducted only during the cooler hours of the day. Similar arrangements were introduced in Rajasthan and NCR regions, where schools were asked to avoid afternoon sessions amid the continuing heatwave conditions.
