NEW DELHI: The Centre’s budget for higher education for 2020-21 is Rs 39,466.53 crore.

While this is a small increase over last year’s Rs 38,317.01 crore, our analysis shows that the budget for several education programmes and institutions have declined or increased only marginally. The budget for scholarships for college and university students has dropped to Rs 141 crore, less than half of this year’s Rs 356 crore. The grants to central universities, Rs 7,643.26 crore is more than the previous year’s budget but less than what the government finally revised it to – Rs 8,286.90 crore.

While government funds drop, tuition fees are rising and that college degree is growing more expensive. To understand how a high tuition fee affects undergraduates across institutions – public and private – we are conducting a short survey. It will take just five minutes to complete.
