Over 450 universities use SWAYAM framework for credit transfer: Education ministry

As of July 2026, over 450 universities have adopted the SWAYAM framework for credit transfer, the ministry of education said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. Under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM) Regulations, 2021, the higher education institutions can offer up to 40% credit in a semester through SWAYAM courses, the education minister said.

Moreover, the education ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC), have been continuously in contact with the higher education institutions to encourage the adoption of the credit framework for SWAYAM courses, the LS reply read.

“The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the UGC, has institutionalised regular engagement with HEIs through periodic meetings, workshops, webinars and advisories to facilitate the adoption of credit framework for SWAYAM courses ,” the official document stated.

A minister in the Lok Sabha also questioned the education ministry whether the UGC has urged the HEIs and universities to integrate Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) and other Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into their curriculum in accordance with the NEP 2020.

SWAYAM records over 6 cr enrolments since launch: Govt

To which, Sukanta Majumdar, minister of state in the ministry of education, replied that the government has framed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with an aim to promote holistic, multidisciplinary, flexible and student-centric education.

The NEP 2020 promotes use and integration of technology in improving teaching, learning, evaluation processes, and enhancing educational access, he added.

The education ministry is implementing the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), which aims to leverage the potential of ICT, in all processes of education, Majumdar said.

With an objective to democratise quality education, under the NMEICT scheme, SWAYAM online platform has been launched to provide free access to courses from premier institutions.

There have been more than 20,000 deliveries of courses on the platform, with cumulative enrolments exceeding 6 crores since its inception, Majumdar added.
