Tamil Nadu to fill 2,708 assistant professor posts in government arts, science colleges: Minister Govi Chezhia

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that 2,708 assistant professor posts will be permanently filled in Government Arts and Science Colleges. The move comes days after the Centre released the long-pending Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds allotted for the state, bringing relief to the government colleges facing staff shortages.

Lauding the Tamil Nadu chief minister for giving priority to higher education and medicine, the minister for higher education Govi Chezhiaan said that the state government has been launching several schemes to improve standards of education.

He also highlighted schemes like ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ introduced to provide skill development training to all students, “helping them become leaders in their chosen fields — not merely job seekers, but entrepreneurs”.

The chief minister has announced the recruitment of 2,708 assistant professors in government colleges to ensure that students’ learning are not affected. “These posts will soon be recruited through direct appointment by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB).” he said.

“To ensure that economic constraints do not hinder access to higher education and to help students pursue studies with dignity, our Chief Minister provides a monthly allowance of Rs. 1,000 under schemes such as ‘Pudhumai Penn’ and ‘Tamil Pudhalvan’,” he added.

A total of 37 new government arts and science colleges have been established in Tamil Nadu over the past four and a half years. This year alone, 16 colleges have been inaugurated and announced, with the sanction of an additional intake of more than 15,000 seats. In line with modern technological needs and local industry requirements, several new courses have also been introduced, the minister said.
