Tamil Nadu: Chennai LKG fees highest in state; fee details of thousands of TN private schools public

While many prominent private TN schools are missing from the list, Tamil Nadu has made fees across schools, classes and districts public. Here’s what the data shows

Chennai schools charge some of the highest fees at entry-level in Tamil Nadu. Statewide data on private school fees published this week shows that annual LKG – lower-kindergarten – fees in Chennai private schools can be close to Rs 70,000 per annum. Meanwhile, a Ranipet private school has reported an approved annual fee of Rs 95,150 for Class 12 – the highest in the state.

This is the first time Tamil Nadu has compiled and made public private school fees across the state. The district-wise list was published this week and in compliance with an order of the Tamil Nadu State Information Commission, pronounced in late May, 2026. Schools had been given till June 15 to submit their details for three years, starting from 2024-25.

Released ahead of the admission season, the school fee data for 2026-27 reveals variations in what private schools across the state are permitted to charge. It also provides parents with a publicly-accessible benchmark for the upcoming academic year, helping families compare schools, budget better and make more informed choices.

That said, the data disclosed does not include fee details of many prominent private schools and chains across Tamil Nadu, including many affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

While Chennai and Ranipet recorded the highest school fees at LKG and Class 12, respectively, at the other end of the spectrum, Pudukkottai reported the state's lowest approved LKG fee at Rs. 3,835. The Nilgiris and Tiruchirappalli shared the lowest approved Class 12 fee at Rs. 6,600. An analysis of the figures show that while all districts have approved fee structures in place, 16 districts recorded Class 12 fee ceilings above Rs 60,000, while the remaining districts fell below that mark.

"It gives families baseline confidence,” said R. Dharaneshwari, a parent from Coimbatore. “We can look at the approved numbers and make decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. However, hidden ancillary costs still catch many off-guard, and it would help if schools directly broke those down for us."

That is the general consensus about the data release – it gives an idea of the baseline but not the full picture. As Careers360 had earlier reported, parents were hoping for a more detailed disclosure on school fees , one that would also reveal the costs and charges related to each of the co-curricular or sports activities, optional or otherwise.

Tamil Nadu Schools: LKG, Class 12 fees

The higher-fee districts are largely concentrated around major urban and educational hubs, although there are notable exceptions. Chennai recorded the state's highest approved LKG fee at Rs. 68,810, reflecting the premium associated with some schools in the capital

Tamil Nadu Schools: Moderate LKG, Class 12 fees

Several districts reported highest Class 12 fees that were lower than Rs 60,000 per annum. However, as the table below shows, that does not imply a lower fee across the board. For example, Thoothukudi’s highest Class 12 fees is Rs 51,480 but its highest LKG fees Rs 42,175.

The second group of districts reflects comparatively moderate fee ceilings, indicating that approved private school fees remain below Rs. 60,000 at the Class 12 level in much of the state.

Pudukkottai stands out with the lowest approved LKG fee of Rs. 3,835, while Nilgiris and Tiruchirappalli share the lowest approved Class 12 fee at Rs. 6,600. The data shows that several districts continue to have relatively lower approved fee ranges.

Cost of Education: Parents seek more clarity

For many families, the sheer publication of this data marks a massive shift towards structural transparency.

"This is the first time many of us have had access to this kind of information," said Saravanan, a Chennai-based parent of two. "Earlier, parents had to rely entirely on word-of-mouth or whatever schools communicated individually. Now, at least, there is an official benchmark." He noted that the disclosures make it significantly easier to audit whether quotes from local schools align with legally-approved ranges.

While parents appreciate the disclosures, many are calling for a more itemised look at school expenses .

"There aren't many extra activities like swimming or specialised sports programmes here in Tiruvannamalai, so I understand why base costs vary by location," explained Jaya, a parent. "But I would still like to know exactly where an extra Rs 1,000 goes when schools collect money for Annual Day or Sports Day. Families work incredibly hard for their earnings, and every single charge should cover a clear, explicit item."

Despite lingering questions about extra fees, Jaya emphasises that the directory remains incredibly practical especially as her family prepares to move to Chennai. "Knowing the approved fee ranges in advance helps us survive the transition. Relocating to a new city brings huge overhead costs, and having this data beforehand allows us to budget correctly and protect our finances."
