Tata Steel CEO appointed chairman of IIT Kharagpur’s board of directors
TV Narendran completed his UG degree in mechanical engineering from NIT Tricy and MBA degree from IIM Calcutta.

NEW DELHI: Tata Steel CEO TV Narendran has been appointed the new chairman of the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
Narendran completed his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineer from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy and MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta,

He has more than 34 years of experience in the mining and metals industry and is a member of the executive committee and the board of the World Steel Association. He co-chaired the mining and metals governor council of the World Economic Forum from 2016 to 2018.
He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and has served as the president of the Indian Institute of Metals from 2021 to 2022. He also headed the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 2021 to 2022. Narendran has been felicitated by the Distinguished Alumnus Award from both NIT Trichy and IIM Calcutta.
Welcoming Narendran, VK Tewari, director of the IIT Kharagpur, said, “As a man beholding technical and industrial supremacy, he understands the need of the society and practical implications of industry-academia amalgamation with a technical institution. We look forward to his able guidance, constructive ideations and supportive encouragement in reshaping this institute for its future aspirations.”
Narendran joined Tata Steel in 1988 after completing the MBA degree from IIM Calcutta. He has played a crucial role in building the 'Tata Tiscon' brand and the distribution network for it. He is currently on the boards of Tata Steel, Tata Steel Europe, CEDEP, XLRI and World Steel Association.
