NEW DELHI: Teachers play an important role in a students’ professional and personal life. Every year, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5 to acknowledge and appreciate their contribution and to celebrate the importance of teachers in our lives.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, Teachers’ Day will not be celebrated physically in many states, however, some of the states have announced to felicitate teachers. The Maharashtra education department is celebrating a teachers’ appreciation week from September 2 to September 7.

Where to watch National Teachers’ Day Award 2021
President Ram Nath Kovind will confer the award to 44 teachers who are selected for the National Teachers Awards 2021 on September 5. Among the selected teachers, two are from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, Odisha, Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Nine of the awardees this year are women.

Why is Teachers’ Day celebrated?
Teachers' Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. In India, the day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s first Vice-President and second President. He was born on September 5, 1888.
One day some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan asked them to observe September 5 as teachers’ day. Since 1962, September 5 is observed as Teachers’ day in India.
Many countries celebrate Teachers' Day on October 5 along with World Teachers' Day, which was established by UNESCO in 1994.
