Meghalaya’s Techno Global University removed from UGC's list of universities

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has removed the name of Meghalaya’s Techno Global University from the list of universities. The commission took the decision after the state education department’s recommendation to remove the university as it did not exist.

UGC explained that TGU was established as a state private university therefore its name was added in UGC’s list in January 2013. “The Techno Global University, Shillong Polytechnic Campus, Mawlai, Shillong, Meghalaya was established by the government of Meghalaya as a state private university,” it said.

“However, the education department, government of Meghalaya vide its letter dated 27.09.2022 recommended to remove the name of university from the UGC list of universities since the university was non-existent,” UGC notice informed.

Moreover, the website of TGU is displaying the following information: “Techno Global University shillong, has never started any academic activity since inception. We have never issued any marksheet, certificate and degree to any person. We have also never authorised any person or institution to act on behalf of us.”

“In view of the above, the name of Techno Global University, Shillong, Meghalaya has been removed from the UGC list of universities,” UGC stated.

TGU amendment act, dissolution

The state had established the university in 2008 to offer courses on physical sciences, life sciences, technology, medical science and paramedical, management, finance and accounting, commerce, humanities, languages and communication, applied and performing arts, education, law, social science and related areas. The courses were sponsored by Techno India, Kolkata, West Bengal.

However, in 2019, the state government passed an amendment act which added the following provisions: “Provided that all such directions which may involve closure of the University or cancellation of degrees or stoppage of admission and any other matter involving the interest of the State Government shall be issued by the Visitor after due consultation with the State Government”.

Moreover, it added the provision that in case the university is dissolved, it will be the responsibility of TGU for making arrangements for the affected students until the last batch of regular courses are completed, in consultation with the UGC, AICTE and other regulatory bodies.
