Telangana: Teen rape survivors pass Class 10 exam, aspire to join police

NEW DELHI: Two minor rape survivors in Telangana passed the Class 10 examination with flying colours, results of which were recently announced in the state. The younger girl (15), who was raped by her father, secured 5.6 GPA (grade point average). Another girl (16), who was raped by her uncle, secured 9.3 GPA.

The 15-year-old was raped by her father in 2023. This was discovered when her grandmother took her to a hospital when she complained of stomach pain. Doctors then found out that she was pregnant.

Her pregnancy could not be aborted as it was in an advanced stage. She delivered a baby in her ninth month of pregnancy, M Mahender Reddy, a police officer, who dealt with both cases, told PTI. The baby was admitted to an orphanage and the girl continued with her education, he added. She passed the class X standard examination with a 5.6 GPA. The father was imprisoned for life by a local court which also awarded a compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the girl, Reddy said.

The other girl (16) was raped by her uncle, Reddy said. She secured an impressive 9.3 GPA in the class X standard exams. Interestingly, both the girls now aspire to join the police force taking inspiration from the personnel of Meerpet police station who helped them get justice.

Reddy, who earlier served as SHO of Meerpet police station, said the woman constables and other police personnel handled the case with a humane approach. He said the officers went beyond the call of duty and tried to instil courage in the survivors' minds and also encouraged them to continue their studies, Reddy added.
