Amid rain in Tamil Nadu, schools will remain closed in some parts of the state. School holiday will be observed in Coimbatore, Dindigul, Puducherry and Karaikal, as per local media reports. Chennai schools are awaiting an official holiday announcement for today, October 26, 2026. District-level holiday announcements may depend on local weather conditions.

Students and parents in Chennai are advised to be in touch with their respective schools for accurate update on holiday. Some schools might choose to conduct online classes to prevent students, teachers and staff members from entering waterlogged areas.

Tamil Nadu school holiday: IMD forecasts heavy rain till October 27

As of October 25, rainfall continued across several parts of Tamil Nadu as the northeast monsoon remained active. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more showers in the state until October 27. An IMD official told PTI the developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is unlikely to affect Tamil Nadu, with the rainfall forecast instead linked to a system over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep.

The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu on October 26 and 27, while light to moderate rain was likely at isolated places in south Tamil Nadu on October 28.

PTI reported that several locations in Tamil Nadu recorded very heavy rainfall between 8.30 am on Saturday and 8.30 am on Sunday. Devikapuram and Nedungunam in Tiruvannamalai district recorded 20 cm and 18 cm of rain, respectively. Several places in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts received heavy rainfall ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm, while locations in and around Chennai recorded between 1 cm and 6 cm.

The rainfall also affected road connectivity in some areas. Restoration work was under way on roads damaged by landslips in the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal regions, while the Coonoor-Mettupalayam highway section remained closed to vehicular traffic.

PTI reported that the depression over the Bay of Bengal was expected to intensify and strengthen into a very severe cyclonic storm. According to the IMD bulletin cited in the report, the system was likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28, with maximum sustained winds of 115–125 kmph and gusts up to 140 kmph.
